Oxnard has a new Mayor!

Luis McArthur give a thumbs up to an uproarious crowd December 17, 2024 after being sworn in as Oxnard’s new Mayor.

Luis Mc Arthur, a 35-year veteran of the Oxnard Police Department, has been elected as the city’s next mayor. The final results from the November 5 election show Mc Arthur with 43.7% of the vote, securing a clear lead over the four other candidates. Bryan MacDonald, a city council member and retired assistant police chief, came in second with 31%. The vote shares remained steady since election night, with Mc Arthur consistently ahead in every round of ballot counts.

Oxnard, Ventura County’s largest city with a population of around 200,000, is divided into six city council districts. The mayor serves as the seventh council member, representing the entire city. While the mayor’s role is largely ceremonial—presiding over council meetings and representing the city at events—it holds symbolic importance as the face of local governance.

Mc Arthur and MacDonald were the frontrunners, both with strong ties to the Oxnard Police Department. MacDonald retired as assistant chief in 2006 after 30 years of service. Mc Arthur, currently a commander, will retire from the police force to assume the mayor’s office. Both candidates had significant campaign funding and high-profile endorsements. Mc Arthur, a Democrat, was backed by the Ventura County Democratic Party. MacDonald, a Republican, received support from the Ventura County Republican Party and endorsements from prominent Democrats, including outgoing mayor Zaragoza and Ventura County supervisor Vianey Lopez.

The Oxnard mayor’s race, like all local elections in California, is nonpartisan. This means political parties don’t nominate candidates, and party affiliations aren’t listed on the ballot. The focus remains on individual qualifications and community impact.
Mc Arthur’s victory reflects his deep roots in the community and his decades of public service. His win sets the stage for a new chapter in Oxnard’s leadership.
